Design Is More Than What Shows Up in Photos
A wedding can look beautiful in photos and still not feel like anything once you’re actually standing in it. Design is part of what I do precisely because the two aren’t the same thing.
I don’t approach a wedding as a checklist of decor choices. I think about it as an atmosphere you build from the ground up: the texture of the linens, how the music shifts as the sun goes down, whether your guests feel comfortable or like they’re waiting for instructions.
Design decisions that come before the pretty parts
Long before moodboards, there are practical choices that shape how a wedding actually feels:
The venue and the season. A wedding at a coastal estate in June has a different rhythm than one at a countryside villa in October, and the design should follow the place rather than fight it.
The guest experience, not just the guest list. Where people sit, how far they walk between the ceremony and the reception, whether there’s shade in the afternoon and something to do between courses. These aren’t decor questions, but they shape the feeling of the day as much as anything visual does.
What actually matters to you. Some couples care enormously about the flowers and not at all about the music. Others are the opposite. I’d rather spend real budget and attention on the two or three things you actually care about than spread it evenly across everything.
Where I focus my attention
- Working with vendors who understand the region, so the food, the flowers and the setting feel like they belong in Sicily rather than anywhere else
- Building a day that has a shape to it, not just a sequence of events
- Making sure the practical logistics (transitions, timing, sound) don’t undercut the atmosphere you’re paying for
None of this replaces the vendors who actually execute it: your florist, your caterer, your musicians. My job is making sure their work adds up to one coherent day instead of a collection of separate good ideas.
